Week 6: Finishing and Framing

I'm not quite finished with the soldering but I should be able to get it all done next week. I'm going to try to go in on Tuesday to put some extra time in.

This week we also discussed what we would want to do for our class project. Our whole class is going to make individual West Virginia themed pieces. We broke into groups of three so that we could work out some themes within the theme. My group is going to go for an industry theme. I am going to work on designing a coal miner's helmet with lamp. I'd like to set it up with the miner's helmet looking straight on with the lamp being the focal point. The background scenery will be green rolling hills and a blue sky. There will be lots of color!

The coal miner's helmet is a special symbol to me. My father, uncles, and grandfather are/were all coal miners. I'm thankful to be able to work on a piece that will have a special meaning. I hope to be able to gift it to my father.

Week 5: foiling and soldering

I made a video about foiling and soldering using iMovie on the iPad.

Week 4: grinding

This week I finished cutting the last of my pieces and I started grinding. Grinding is easy, a little too easy. I overground a few pieces. I'll recut those next week.

I'll get some pictures/video of grinding for next week's post. These pictures are of me finishing my cutting.

Week 3: project

So today we jumped right in! We received the pattern for the piece we're going to make. Everyone is doing the same thing but we got to choose our colors. The hardest thing was trying to see it all come together. I think the colors I chose will be pretty. I felt like I got a pretty good start. I only have the inner ring left to do. I may have to go back and recut some of my pieces. But hey, I'm just a beginner! I definitely need to work on precision in my lines.

Introductions

I am Amy Lilly. I teach French at Huntington High. This is my eighth year teaching. I don't have an art background but I enjoy getting crafty and being creative. I love traveling to France (and everywhere!) I like to take my gnome with me when I go. I've been in many cathedrals throughout Europe and I am enamored by the stained glass windows every time. It never gets old.

I would like to get to know more about the art of stained glass in West Virginia and research the background of stained glass in France. I think it would be great to be able to connect our cultures and do a project in class.

Also, if you like to travel and want to see some cathedrals, I am taking students to London and Paris this spring break, 2014. If you are interested, you can check out the details here: http://www.eftours.com/1357840
